The word ‘hydroponics’ refers to growing plants without soil.
The word derives from the Greek ‘hydro’ (water) + ‘ponic’ (working).
Hydroponics is widely used to grow healthy plants and vegetables, fruits and herbs. Any plant’s
requirements can be met without using soil or natural sunlight, and any grower’s wishes can be accounted for. By controlling
nutrients, lighting, temperature, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen and pH, today’s plant-lover can garden inside, year-round
- and create a tropical corner in their den, or a vegetable garden in a corner of their kitchen. The sterile growing media used in hydroponics give a very hygienic environment for the plant and its grower,
making it possible to garden indoors.
Much higher yields can be obtained through hydroponics than through conventional
gardening in soil, pests and diseases are reduced, and optimum conditions can be maintained with simple adjustments to the
plant’s growing conditions – each factor that affects the plant’s growth can be tailored to the plant’s
needs and the grower’s requirements. Through years of research
into which combinations of elements affect plant growth and in which ways, scientists discovered the first hydroponic formulas.
Nutrients are dissolved in the water, so plants receive the correct nutrition when they need it. There is always enough nutrition, because the pH and nutritional value of the water are easily measured
and maintained.
